JV Red Devils Roll Over Thomson 40-26
– Rex Edmunds

Thomas McWhorter scored a touchdown to give the Junior Varsity Lincoln County Red Devil squad the lead versus larger neighbor, Thomson, then intercepted a Bulldog pass to seal a 40-26 victory, taking the JV Devils to 2-0 on the season.

The Red Devils received the opening kickoff, and Jonathan Norman wasted no time getting in the end zone on a 44-yard run.  The extra point by Fortson Partridge gave LC a 7-0 lead.  Charles Jean-Charles forced a Thomson fumble that gave the ball back to Red Devils.  After a short drive, Partridge connected on a 32-yard field goal to give the Devils a 10-0 lead.  LC recovered an onside kick, and drove well into Bulldog territory before settling for another Partridge field goal from 35 yards, making the score 13-0, mid-way through the 2nd quarter.

After the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs, the Devils moved the ball steadily down the field again, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown pass from McWhorter to Walker Thornton.  Thomson was able to generate a little momentum towards the end of the half, scoring a touchdown as the clock hit 0:00.  The conversion attempt was no-good, so Lincoln County took a 20-6 lead into the half.

The Devils weren’t going to let Thomson build momentum, so they attempted  an onside kick to start off the 2nd half, and it was recovered by Landon Garrison, giving the Devils the ball and great field position.  However, the offenses stagnated a little, and the teams exchanged punts to start the half.  But on the next possession, Jonathan Norman picked right back up where he left off, scampering 43 yards to the 37-yard line.  On the next play, McWhorter hit Christian Hopkins streaking down the left sideline for a 37-yard touchdown.  The extra point by Partridge gave the Devils a 27-6 lead.

The Dogs managed to drive down the field and add a TD towards the middle of the 3rd quarter, but Jonathan Norman struck again, this time on a 49 yard run out of the power formation late in the 3rd.  However, Thomson scored again at the beginning of the 4th, making the score 33-20.   The Devils drove back down the field, well into range for Fortson Partridge’s big leg.  However, the Devils attempted a fake field goal, but did not convert it.

Thomson took over on the 20-yard line.  With time dwindling down to around the 6:00 mark, Thomson hit on their best play of the game – a receiver got behind the Devils’ tight defensive formation and went 90 yards to bring the Dogs within a single score at 33-26.  Lincoln County averted disaster – with under 5:00 on the clock, the Devils made a crucial error by snapping the ball over the punter’s head, but it was negated by a Thomson penalty that moved the Devils closer to the line to gain.  So, LC decided to go for the first down, near midfield, and made it, with the clock around the 3:00 mark.

The Devils drove down the field, and Thomas McWhorter crossed the goal line; with Partridge’s kick, the score was 40-26.   The Bulldogs managed a decent drive, but McWhorter ended their hopes with an interception.   McWhorter finished the contest 5-6 passing, for 125 yards and 2TD’s, in addition to the crucial interception on defense.  Big numbers for Lil’ John – Jonathan Norman had 8 carries for 175 yards and 2 TD’s, and was the leading tackler for the game.
