Residents Demand Moratorium on Data Centers at Packed McCormick Council Meeting

Hundreds of McCormick county residents turned out tonight at the county council meeting to make it known they do not want a data processing center in McCormick. McCormick County council had been considering voting to rezone a large segment of land for use as a data center prior to tonight’s public hearing. Residents were particularly incensed that the whole project had been kept secret up until a meeting last week at Savannah Lakes Village.

Numerous speakers were allowed to address counsel, followed by a public comment segment in which 16 speakers had signed up. The meeting lasted over two and a half hours with calls for a 1-year moratorium on all data processing centers in the county and for the county to table the vote on rezoning. County council will continue to consider the issue in August, with a vote scheduled for August 18th.
